Well friends, I just completed my first custom-made tote bag. I've hesitated for a long time about custom work and am still up in the air on how I feel about it. First of all, I get really nervous selling bags to people I know because I constantly worry about how good it is or if they will find something wrong with it. Secondly, I find it very hard to work under pressure for a certain person. When I create a bag and have no specifications, rarely am I upset with how it turned out and am often proud of the finished product.
For instance, I finished this tote tonight and felt pretty pleased with it. Jimmy commented that he liked it and so did Emily and Nina. Then I remembered that Deana mentioned wanting a shorter strap. Well these "messenger totes" have a once piece strap so I would have had to take the entire bag apart to shorten it. So I hand-sewed some clasps on to shorten it by choice. However, when I finished, I realized that they weren't very durable. In the end, I ended up cutting the strap to shorten it and it looks fine.
I am also debating custom work because I refuse to buy any new materials. Although I want people to have the option of receiving personalized totes, buying new material would go against the mission of Greenie Bean Recyclables.
