As we near mid-January, my thoughts travel to winters past, and I wonder how your spirits are handling these frigid and dark days? For several years, I've struggled with lost creativity, inspiration, and joyousness through the winter season. The cold can weaken even the strongest enthusiasm as we're forced indoors.

Chatting with a friend on the eve of winter 2008, I recall my own, distinct words, "I just can't handle another long winter. I can't do it." Thankfully, those months passed quickly in the wake of a new house and home remodeling up to our elbows. This winter, thus far, has been a blessing as well as the snow held off until December 1st. My brain has been successfully tricked into thinking winter is just beginning when, in all actuality, we should be approaching the half way mark.

Stepping outdoors, for longer than a walk to the car, breathes fresh air into these hibernating lungs. I've come to appreciate the snow when *gasp* I'm appropriately dressed for low temps. The short walks to the bus stop and home again force me out of my comfort zone and into appreciation of the sun's short visit. No longer do I travel to work in the dark and return home in the dark, effectively missing any snippet of day light. Three months of artificial light wreak havoc on my mental wellbeing and immune system.

Leaving Chicago for the weekend breaks up the monotony of this igloo'd city. We welcomed 50 degree temps in Nashville just before Christmas while catching up with my cousins and seeing Garth Brooks live! Despite the treacherous traffic, our visit to Central Illinois for the holidays brought refreshment and cheer to end 2010. We're continuing our tour of the midwest with a trip to Cleveland this weekend (dear friends and Jimmy's cousins). Before we know it, February will be here and we'll be jumping on a plane bound for New Mexico (we've never been southwest) to visit our favorite ecologists!
